Iranian Women’s National Soccer Team Banned from Olympic Qualifying Tournament
Players of the Iranian women’s national soccer team react after withdrawing from their qualifying match against Jordan for the 2012 London Olympic Games in Amman June 3. The Iranian team were banned from the match on Friday in the second round of qualifiers in protest against guidelines on their veil. The FIFA woman’s association requires that any covering used does not cover the neck and ears. In Iran all women are required to cover their hair in public to conform to the Islamic dress code. It’s important to remember that women’s rights in Iran are trampled on in every category and they’re treated as second class citizens, at best. They are required to wear the veil; it is NOT their personal choice.
The only countries that mandate the hijab today are Iran and Saudi Arabia.
This is disgusting, these women are being screwed from every side. The west if wearing hijab and east if not wearing hijab. I don’t understand why a stranger somehow feels like he/she has the right to tell these women what to wear and not to wear.
I understand that this a sport and there are regulations, but I don’t know why covering the neck and ears can effect the outcome of the game? Until Fifa can give a good reason on why they have that ban, it’s complete and utter bullshit. Let’s say they aren’t forced to wear it, who is Fifa exactly to force women to not wear it? How can they consider themselves better than Iran that forces women into wearing it? This is only Iran that forces their women to wear hijab, what about a Kuwaiti muslim woman? What about any muslim woman in the world?
Fifa, fuck you. Iran and Saudi Arabia, fuck you too.
